New battery recycling program for Acadia

To further improve waste management systems at Acadia and advance campus sustainability efforts, Acadia has joined Call2Recycle®, the only no-cost battery and cell phone collection program in North America. Acadia can now recycle batteries used on campus every day, preventing these products from entering the solid waste stream.

The following items are accepted in the new program:

  • All types of cellphones are accepted regardless of size, make, model or age
  • Batteries (weighing less than 5 kg each):
  • Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd )
  • Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
  • Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)
  • Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn)
  • Small Sealed Lead (SSLA/Pb)
  • Single-use batteries, like alkaline

Multiple waste stations are deployed in departments across campus for staff, students and faculty.  Please contact jodie.noiles@acadiau.ca or jay.rees@acadiau.ca for more information.

Since 1996, over 34 million kilograms of batteries and cellphones have been collected through Call2Recycle. Call2Recycle is the first program of its kind to attain Responsible Recycling Practices Standard (R2) certification, as well as Basel Action Network (BAN) e-Steward qualification and upholds strict third-party standards for environmental safety and social responsibility.
